Treks from Kedah
1 To Gunung Leuser peak (3.404m) (appr. 10-12 days)
Starting at our lodge at Kedah at an altitude of 1.400m, we trek 2 days through primary rainforest with dense vegetation, up and downhill at altitudes between 1.000m and 2.900m. Night-camps near rivers. From day 3-7, we move at altitudes above 3.000m in alpine areas, with an unique vegetation and moss. Usually we reach the peak of Gunung Leuser after day 7, depending on weather.
Return to lodge in 3-4 days.

2 To Gunung Angkosan peak (2.891m) (appr. 3 days)
  This demanding trek leads us for 2 days through dense rainforest, climbing from 1.400 m to the peak of Angkosan with alpine Flora. There will be a good chance to spot Sumatra Orang Utan, Siamang, Python, King Cobra, Sunbird, Sumatran Trogon, others. Tiger will be frequently our neighbor, but we usually don’t see. Third day we return to our Lodge again, trekking through dense rainforest.

3 To upper Alas valley with huge waterfall (6 days)
  First day we will climb to the Gunung Angkosan peak at 2.891m, day 2 - 3 we hike through pristine rainforest, before we reach the Alas river in the afternoon at 1.500m sea-level.

On fourth day we reach the 200m high waterfall at the Alas, and enjoy the tremendous view and scenery. We take a chilling bath at this extraordinary place and stay overnight. There will be chances to see wildlife as usual, Sunbird, Clouded Leopard, Bulbul, Partridge, Sumatran Green Pigeon and other. Return to Bungalows takes another 2 days on a different trekking route.
   
4 To waterfall near our lodge (2 days)
  This 25m waterfall is less spectacular, but also situated in an unique environment. We will camp for 1 night at the foot of the waterfall, having a chilling bath in the morning. The area is rich of wildlife, such as Orang Utan, Siamang, Thomas Leaf, Sumatran Pit Viper, Pheasant, Hornbill, others.
   
5 Daytreks into the Rainforest
   
6 To West-coast of Sumatra (exclusively through Rainforest, appr. 28 days)
  A demanding expedition through highland rainforest, alpine areas, lowland rainforest as well as swamps, showing the huge Biodiversity of Gunung Leuser Eco System. After 3 weeks we are passing several ethnic groups in North West Sumatra. For this expedition you should be in excellent physical and mental condition and willing to face the challenges of this untouched and almost inaccessible rainforests. You can imagine, that on such a long and demanding trek through pristine rainforest, there is daily chance to see the whole range of wildlife. After appr. 4 weeks we will reach the city of Tapaktuan at the West-Coast of Aceh.
 
Treks 2 – 5 are wildlife treks. Treks to Gunung Leuser and Tapaktuan are real challenges.

Treks from Ketambe lodge Wisma Cinta Alam
   
7 To Gunung Kemiri peak (3.314m) (appr. 5 – 6 days)
  We start at our lodge at Ketambe in Alas-valley, with a Minibus-ride of appr. 2 hours to the village of Gumpang in the upper Alas valley. At an altitude of 550m, we cross the Alas river on a Suspension Bridge and hike through Cocoa and Spice-gardens of the local villagers for the first day. The second day we enter primary rainforest, with chances to see Sumatra Orang Utan, Gibbon, Siamang, tracks of Tiger, reptiles, birds and stunning nature. The third day we reach the alpine areas with lesser and smaller trees, but tremendous views over Central Gunung Leuser Eco System. The summit will be reached usually on the fourth day, depending on the weather.

8 Surrounding of Hot Spring area Gurah (2 – 4 days, upon request)
  Johan will guide you through his home-terrain, explaining Flora and Fauna to you and looking out for Sumatra Orang Utan, Gibbon, King Cobra, Ratsnake, Iguana, Cuckoo, Parrot. The length of this trek will be upon your request, minimum 2 days.
   
9 Around Marpunga area (3 – 5 days)
  The village of Marpunga we reach on a 2 hours Minibus-ride from Ketambe. Marpunga Lake is a 2-day trek into deep jungle and well known for it’s rich bird and wildlife. There are good chances to see Orang Utan, Siamang, Sunbear, Salvadori’s Nightjar, Sumatran Cochoa, Red Headed Krait, Gliding Lizard, Orchids, Rafflesia. The length of this trek will be upon your request, minimum 4 days.

Treks 8 - 10 are wildlife treks. Trek to Gunung Kemiri is a challenge.
 
Special Treks at Kedah + Ketambe
11 Wildlife Trek (3 – 5 days)
  Special Wildlife Trek (4 – 6 days, or more, upon request).
This area is not shown in the Web. You will find a map with Mr. Jally and Johan at Kedah + Ketambe lodges. Sumatra Orang Utan, Black Gibbon, Sunbear, Python, Cobra, Elephant, Monitor Lizard, Hornbill, Bulbul, Pitta, Wild Chicken, are very common in these selected areas.
We expect usually good results in spotting wildlife in these parts of Gunung Leuser Eco System.
   
12 Bird Watching
  In future we intensify our bird-watching treks, since there is obviously good opportunity to spot indigenious bird-species, only living in Gunung Leuser Eco System, not yet published in any books. On recent treks we spotted grey-breasted Partridge, Sumatran Peacock Pheasant, Sumatran Green Pigeon, Barred Eagle Owl, Short-tailed Frogmouth, Salvadori’s Nightjar, Sumatran Trogon, Blue-battled Bulbul, Rusty Breasted Wren Babbler, the very rare white-crested Sumatra Laughingthrush (Garrulax Bicolor), Sumatran Cochoa, and several other rare species, most of them endemic to Gunung Leuser Eco System.
   
13 Night Trek
  Special Night Trek (min. 2 days, schedule upon request).
This trek we offer at some specific areas at Ketambe and in the upper Alas valley, to be accessed from Kedah. On these treks we keep special attention on night-active mammals, birds, reptiles, such as Tiger, Sunbear, Clouded Leopard, Civet, Ozelot, Lori, Python, King Cobra, Sumatran Pit Viper.
We expect usually good results in spotting wildlife on these treks.

Rafting on Alas River, from base Camp Ketambe Wisma Cinta Alam
14 Day-rafts near Ketambe, 3 – 5 hours, dependent on waterlevel
  This is a short rafting trip on the Alas. We start at the junction of Gurah river, floating down for 1 hour through a rainforest canopy, passing Ketambe research station. You will pass mixed landscape of jungle and gardens and paddy-fields of the neighboring villages. You can see Blue Headed Kingfisher, Green Bee-Eater, Hornbill, Maquaque, others.
   
15 Raft to Gelombang (3 days, 2 nights)
  This trip we will start south of Kutacane at the village of Muara Situlen. We will pass for several hours farmland, before we enter the dense canopy of the rainforest. For the next 1,5 days we are passing dense rainforest, you will see rich wildlife, especially birds, such as Kingfisher, Hornbill, others. At 2 night-camp we can interrupt the trip at the junction of the Bengkulen River for 1 or more day and trek and hike in absolutely untouched rainforest, rich of wildlife.

Raft to Gelombang  and further river boat trip from Gelombang to Singkil (4 days, 3 nights)

  This trip we will start south of Kutacane at the village of Muara Situlen. We will pass for several hours farmland, before we enter the dense canopy of the rainforest. For the next 1,5 days we are passing dense rainforests, you will see rich wildlife, especially birds, such as Kingfisher, Hornbill, others. We will add one additional night camp, before we reach Gelombang early next morning. At Gelombang there are no facilities for accomodation. We arrange for you a boat, which floats you down the lower Alas to Singkil. On the lower Alas there is good chance to spot Crocodile, Python, while passing the Singkil Swamps.

At Singkil you can choose, whether to return to Medan, Lake Toba, Lake Maninjau or you proceed to Pulau Banyak. Being so close to a paradise like Pulau Banyak it is, we recommend, to grap the chance and visit this paradise of 45 lovely, almost inhabited islands, with stunning white beaches and dense rainforests on Pulau Tuangku and Pulau Bangkaru.
